Abstract

This study aims to examine the strategy of forming religious moderation values at Pesantren Mambaul Ulum Bata-Bata through a scaffolding approach, as well as formulating a relevant character education model in the context of Pesantren. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study indicate that moderation values are not only taught theoretically, but are fostered through a collective life ecosystem that is full of role models and habits. The main finding in this study is the formation of a scaffolder model consisting of three main layers: pedagogical scaffolding by ustadz (Teacher), symbolic scaffolding by kiai, and social scaffolding by fellow students. The three interact to form a reflective, dialogical, and practical learning environment. The kiai's role model becomes a strong symbolic foundation, followed by a critical but directed pedagogical structure, and egalitarian social interaction in building moderate awareness. This model is considered contextual, adaptive to the challenges of the times, and has the potential to be replicated in the context of other Pesantren. This study concludes that moderation education in Pesantren is not enough if it is only supported by a formal curriculum, but must live in an authentic, collective, and sustainable Pesantren culture. This finding contributes to the development of a community-based Islamic character education strategy in facing the challenges of intolerance and radicalism.
